Lauryn Hill was on thursday charged with failing to pay
tax on more than $1.8 million by the US Department of Justice.
According to the court papers, Hills earned more than
$1.6 million between 2005 and 2007 but failed to file tax returns to the US
internal revenue service in that period.
Adding that the former Fugee singers earned the money
mostly from film industries and royalties from recording. She is also the owner
of four different companies namely: studio 22, Boogie Tours, LH Productions
2001 and Creations Music.
She is to face three counts charge of tax evasion. If
convicted she will serve one year in jail for each charge and a $100.000 fine.
She is to appear before a federal magistrate court on June 29.
Lauryn who is planning a comeback later this year was the
lead singer of the Fugees. Her solo career began in 1998 with the album “The
miseducation of Lauryn Hill” which sold 8 million copies. The “Time Magazine”
pronounced her the “The Hip-Hop Nation.”
She took time off to raise her six children, five of whom
she had with Rohan Marley, the son of Bob Marley.
