The United States Consulate General, Lagos, has called for applications from Nigerian youths for the Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative, for the 2013 programme year.
The CYFI, is a youth-based initiative launched in 2011 by the Consulate to bring together Nigerian youths of exceptional vision, skills and experience to design and implement projects that have a positive impact on the Nigerian society.
According to a statement by the Consulate on Thursday, applicants can apply as individuals or as a group (maximum three members).
The CYFI is a year-long programme in which outstanding young Nigerians are selected as fellows and grouped into teams to design and implement a project with a social impact.
Such projects are centered on education, vocational training, human rights awareness, health, and university volunteerism.
The Consulate provides selected fellows with financial support for their projects, networking opportunities, and a transportation stipend.
Apart from meeting like - minded youths, fellows have the opportunity to build a closer relationship with the Consulate.
The CYFI Board of Directors, in conjunction with the Public Affairs Section of the consulate select fellows who demonstrate exceptional vision, skills and experience. In its inaugural year, 15 fellows were selected.
CYFI was named after Walter Carrington, a former ambassador to Nigeria who was a champion of civil liberties and democracy.
The CYFI initiative is geared towards putting the ideals of Carrington who brought closer ties between the US and Nigeria into practice.

What is expected from a CYFI fellow?
- Complete a project with a social impact as part of project team
- Attend monthly project status meetings with CYFI Board of Directors
- Participate in roundtables, networking events, and teambuilding events
- Prospective fellows should note that all meetings and groupwork for CYFI project will be conducted in Lagos State. Fellows who live outside of the greater Lagos metropolitan area and are unable to attend frequent meetings with their project teams and monthly meetings with the CYFI Board, in Lagos, will not be considered for the fellowship.
Application deadline is December 15, 2012. The CYFI Board will interview shortlisted individual and group applicants in January 2013, and selected CYFI fellows will be announced by February 2013.
