Desmond Tutu, Anglican cleric and former archbishop
of Cape Town is the winner of the 2013 Templeton Prize.
The Templeton Foundation said in a statement that
the prize was in recognition of his
“lifelong work in advancing
spiritual principles such as love and forgiveness which has helped to liberate
people around the world.”
Tutu will be the second religious leader
after Dalai Lama to win the prize. Dalai Lama won the prize in 2012 for
promoting collaborations between Budhism and science.
The Archbishop said in a
video statement that he was “totally bowled over” by the award.
The Templeton Prize
is dotted with 1,7 million dollars and honours someone who has made an “exceptional
contributions to affirming life’s spiritual dimension.” It will be officially presented to Tutu at a
public ceremony at Guildhall in London on May 21.
