Tennis: Serena Williams Wins Family Circle Cup


Serena Williams won  the WTA-Tournament in Charleston (South Carolina/USA). She won the championship after nine months of inactivity in 58 minutes. She demolished her opponent, Lucie Safarova, the world 26th, with a 6-0, 6-1 victory on 8th April. It was her 40th WTA title and first since 2008.

 Williams was dominant in her matches and serves. She dismissed Stosur, the world’s  5th ranked player and the reigning U.S. Open Champion, in the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-1.

Her opening match was slow, had just a day to practice for the tournament. She had a 6-3, 6-4 win over Elena Vesnina.

 However, her match with Marina Erakovic was sharper as she beat her 6-2, 6-2. She was also controling her quaterfinals match with Sabine Lisicki (Berlin), who retired after straining her left ankle.

 Williams won her 40th championship on the clay with astounding victory over Safarova. Her will play her next march in May at Italien Open in Madrid. Thereafter, she will compete at the year’s second Grand Slam, the French Open in Paris.

The Family Circle Cup victory earned Serena Williams $115,000. Apart from playing tennis, Serena is schooling and plans to relaunch her clothing line.
