George Zimmerman, the neighbourhood watch volunteer who shot and killed an unarmed black teenager has been charge with second-degree murder, which could result in a life sentence if convicted. He said he acted on self-defense.
Zimmerman turned himself in to the state officials and was arrested. The
judge handling the case found out that Zimmerman has a case to answer and set a
hearing date on May 29, 2012.
Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O’ Mara told Piers Morgan of CNN that his first action will be to "bring down the level of anger, animosity, just frustrations, emotions" surrounding the case. He explained that the case has human and lefgal aspects "We have the human tragedy side of it. We are going to try to bridge that if we can, There are words that need to be said."
It took the United
states of American Law enforcement departments to file a charge against
Zimmerman. The delay caused so much racial tension and protests in the States,
that the state Governor Rick Scott, had to appoint a Special prosecutor Angela
Corey, to investigate the case.
Special prosecutor
Angela corey, promised that she will ensure that the Judge or jury will base
their decisions on important evidence available, maintaining that the case will
not be affected by petition or pressure.
Martins Parents
were relieved that the law enforcement departments are finally doing the right
thing. Their lawyer accused Zimmerman
of murdering Trayvon in cold blood. The case received public attention through
the internet campaign embarked upon by Trayvon’s parents, who accused the
police saying they did not investigate the murder of their son because he was
black.
Zimmerman has
apologised to Trayvon’s parents and was released from prison on Sunday. He posted $150,000 bond for his release.
