Azazi |
President Jonathan |
The President Jonathan Goodluck on Friday relieved both the Defence Minister, Dr. Mohammed Bello and National Security adviser, Andrew Azazi of their posts.
According to Reuben Abati, the special adviser to the President on media
General Azazi will be replaced by Sambo Dasuki.
In a live media chat, President
Jonathan said that his decision to change his national security adviser was
necessitated by the changing tactics of Boko Haram sect.
"if you study the evolution of
Boko Haram, they are changing their tactics every day, so you also have to
change your staff and personnel to beat their styles."
In other words his Azazi lacked the
strategy and expertise to tackle Boko Haram. The question is does Dasuki
possess what it takes to deal with Boko Haram?
Only time will tell if the changes
are worth it because the problem is not these men alone. As a General Azazi
ought to have been able to meet up with the so called changing tactics of Boko
Haram sect. His failure puts a question mark on the quality of our military
training system.
Corruption is the main issue here.
Until the Nigerian armed forces are rid of corruption, all efforts of the
government to contain Boko Haram will be fruitless. This is because combating
terrorism requires great deal of intelligence activities. Agreed, I do not have
experience on military tactics but common sense tells me that a prerequisite
for a successful intelligence operation is the ability of those involved to
keep their operation secret. I wander how many Nigerian police or military
officers will be able to resist $1,000 offer in an exchange for an information.
Another problem facing the war
against Boko Haram is the fact that the financiers of this sect are still
freely moving around. Although the government claimed to know the financial
backers of Boko Haram sect, it has failed to prosecute them till date. Untill
these men are brought to book all talks and sacks are mere words.
