A source close to the family said that the one
year mourning period which according to Igbo burial rites should count from the
day of the burial in March will now count from the day of Ojukwu’s death which
was November last year.
This arrangement is to enable Ikemba’s widow
and and the Nigerian envoy to Spain, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu to carry out her
duties as an ambassador in a foreign country without wearing black mourning
outfits (Akwa uju).
“Some
family members felt that one year mourning period should be appropriate in view
of Ikemba’s status. The family has therefore decided that the removal of akwa
ujuby the widow should be brought forward from one year of the burial date to
one year after death which is November this year. Plans have already begun for
the one year anniversary of the death which is November”
