Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma |
She defeated the incumbent
leader Jean Ping of Gabon who has led the union since 2008 by securing 37 out
of 54 African Union nations votes.
This is a good move in the
right direction if it means that the lots of African women would change for the
better. The truth is that Africa is a man’s world. Women are not taken
seriously. Some changes are taken place but there is still more to be done to
empower African woman. More Women have been appointed and elected into
political offices but the mindset of most African men about the place of women
in this life need to change. Most of them still see a woman’s place as being in
the kitchen. A woman respected a little only when she is called Mrs somebody
with children. So many single ladies go to extremes to have husbands.
African woman deserves more than she’s getting. She deserves respect, recognition and a better deal as a single woman, a single mother and married woman in African society. I personally see Dlamini-Zuma’s election as cosmetic in the sense that it will not do much to alleviate the daily thugery of an African woman.
Until African man stops
seeing African woman as an instrument of procreation that must be possessed and
dominated the lot of African woman will remain dismally when when compared to
that of developed world.
I will like these African women who find themselves in political
positions to work together with their male counterparts to change anti women
laws in their respective countries.
We deserve more than we are getting. Let’s push for more changes. More need to be done to empower African woman.
Congratulation.
